Crystal Middle School Behavior Rubric

About Their Behavior Rubric

Vince Sturgis is a teacher at Crystal Middle School in the Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District in Fairfield, California. He developed his behavior rubric independently back in 2015 and iterates on it annually based on feedback.

The behavior rubric focuses on Student Excellence & Self Management and includes a list of rubric items for which students can earn or lose points, such as:

  • Tardiness
  • Following Instructions
  • Respect
  • Staying on Task
  • Helping Others

What’s great about this rubric is its specificity: students know exactly what’s expected of them in all locations and at all times, teachers know exactly what they can and should give points for, and it’s easy to report on growth and performance for each expectation.

That means it’s easier to use and build buy-in: five months into the 2022-2023 school year, Mr. Sturgis has given over 50,000 points to students.
