Briggsdale School

Briggsdale School is a PK-12 school in  Colorado. Their behavior rubric is divided into three main categories: Respect, Excellence, & Self-Management. Under each category are associated rubric items for which students can earn or lose points.

For example, students may lose a point for having a “hat on indoors” under Respect or gain a point for “helping others” under Excellence.

This school year, they have a 14:1 positive-to-negative point ratio. That means students have 14 positive interactions for every negative interaction.

House Competitions

The behavior rubric also has a section for House Points, with an item for “first place,” which is worth five points, and an item for “second place,” which is worth three points. With this category, students earn points for winning house challenges.

Teacher Buy-In

To develop the rubric, the leadership team went to the staff and hosted a series of exploratory discussions to gather feedback. Then, a committee of teachers reviewed all the notes and drafted the final expectations. We appreciate how Briggsdale included its staff in the process. Not only are they the ones expected to give points, but they also have a strong understanding of the school culture and the behaviors that can accentuate it and detract from it.
