What research shows PBIS works?

AdminSite LeaderWorks on Web

PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) is an evidence-based framework, and the research behind it is consistent.

  • A randomized controlled trial in 37 elementary schools over four years found that schools using School-Wide PBIS saw fewer behavior problems, concentration issues and office discipline referrals, plus better social-emotional functioning and prosocial behavior (source).
  • Systematic reviews confirm that PBIS improves student outcomes, educator practices and school systems, and reduces exclusionary discipline (source).

These are the sources to cite when a Federal Programs Coordinator asks whether PBIS is evidence-based.
